From the blackened sky

Annette Marie Hyder

The rain beats its wings
against my window
like a frightened bird

and you are like that
like a bird seeking shelter
from the storm
while at the same time
you are  the storm
and running from yourself.

Casement, sash, hinges and latch
all contrive to see my window come undone
for you.

My window is open
to the elements, to the rain, to you
my window is open
for you to come through.
