By Annette Marie Hyder
Carry the things that matter to you
on the inside lining of the coat
that is your heart.
Keep them under your tongue
like a cyanide capsule.
Get them tattooed like a secret map
on your soul.
Wear everything else ostentatiously.
Flaunt your ephemera.
Drop coins of all that does not matter to you
on the ground
a distraction for those who grasp with greedy fingers
at any shiny thing
and have not the wit nor eyes
to see the firelight gleam of the coat of many colors
underneath your skin.
